Supreme Court Orders Release of RPP Vice-Chair Rabindra Mishra

A joint bench of Supreme Court justices Kumar Chudal and Til Prasad Shrestha has ordered the release of Rabindra Mishra, senior vice-chair of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), from judicial custody.


The court directed Mishra’s release under the surety of his legal representative, with a rider that he should present himself before the court if the court summons him.

The order came in response to a habeas corpus petition dated May 13 from Sarika Karki, the wife of Mishra, who had sought the latter’s release, accusing police of detaining him unlawfully.

Police had arrested Durga Prasain Mishra and a number of other RPP leaders, among others, on the charge of instigating incidents of arson, looting and vandalism during a March 28 protest of royalist forces in Kathmandu, in which a journalist and a transport worker had lost their lives against the backdrop of a mayhem and brutal suppression of the protest on the part of the state.

The self-styled commander of the protest, Durga Prasain, and several other figures are still behind bars.
