The Joint People's Movement Committee for the Restoration of Monarchy has appealed for the safety and security of Durga Prasain in custody in Nepal, claiming that his life was at risk.
Issuing a public statement on April 10, the committee thanked Indian police for "assisting in Prasai's safe passage from Guwahati, Assam to the Nepal border after he reportedly sought protection to re-enter the country". Prasai is the coordinator of the National Campaign to Protect Nation, Nationality, Religion and Culture.
Prasai did not surrender but voluntarily sought a safe return to Nepal, the committee said, criticizing the government's claim that Prasain had fled the country after being forced out of a peaceful gathering in Tinkune, Kathmandu. At the same time, the Nepal Police has reportedly stated that it had no prior knowledge of Prasain's re-entry.
"There is a serious risk to his life,” the statement warned, pointing at the possibility of his enforced disappearance and urged the human rights fraternity, journalists and the civil society to ensure Prasain's personal safety.
Pointing out that Prasain is battling cancer, the committee called on the National Human Rights Commission and the government to facilitate his safe transport to medical facilities and judicial appointments.
