Is a barely 50 percent pass rate in Secondary Education Examinations something to laugh about?
Definitely not.
Pointing out at this below-par performance of our education system, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has taken a swipe at teachers, right after a month-long protest of teachers of community schools, part of their years-long effort to get a School Education Act that incorporates their demands, ended with an agreement with the government.
PM Oli, speaking at a program to mark the National Information and Communication Technology Day on Friday, stated that teachers had not realized the need to do some introspection even when 52 percent of SEE students are failing to make it through.
The chief executive was particularly miffed at some unidentified teacher for verbally abusing him for “some unexplained reason” on social media.
The teacher in question was stating that a pass rate of 48 percent is good enough, PM Oli said, wondering if teachers remain busy on Facebook at the expense of their responsibilities and the students’ future.
Nepali students are very talented, but they lack counselling and opportunities, Oli said, stressing the need for teachers to think over the reasons behind this miserable performance, instead of taking it lightly.
