The ruling coalition is hopeful that an agreement between the government and protesting teachers will be reached today (April 30). After a meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, CPN-UML Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali said he believes the talks will end positively.

Gyawali said discussions with the teachers are moving forward and that both sides are likely to reach an agreement today itself. Based on the understanding between the Nepal Teachers Federation and the government, he said a conclusion could be reached soon, and teaching in public schools could resume smoothly from Thursday.

He also made it clear that the government has not taken the teachers demands lightly. According to Gyawali, although the government invited the teachers for talks from the beginning, the delay happened because the teachers insisted they would not return without the amendment of the Education Act.

Gyawali said, “Talks with the teachers are progressing positively. I believe an agreement will be made today, and teaching will resume normally from tomorrow. This is based on the continuous discussions and understandings between the government and the Nepal Teachers' Federation. The government has not played around with their demands. It had called them for talks from the start, but for different reasons, they could not come. The former education minister also made  efforts. The delay happened because the teachers took a firm stand to return only after the law was changed. I am hopeful that teachers will return to schools from tomorrow.”

Gyawali expressed hope that from Thursday, teachers across the country will return to community schools, and teaching will continue smoothly.
