South Korea’s Acting President and Prime Minister, Han Duck-soo, has resigned from both positions.
Han announced his resignation on Thursday, saying he made the decision to take on a bigger responsibility for the country and its people.
“I have made this decision to take on greater responsibility for the country,” he said.
He resigned to run in the upcoming general election, which will be held in June.
On March 24, the Constitutional Court had overturned the impeachment against Han and reinstated him as Acting President.
In December, President Yoon Suk-yeol had tried to impose military rule, but the attempt failed. At that time, Han was the Prime Minister. After that, the parliament impeached Han and made him Acting President. Later, the parliament also impeached him for not moving forward with the impeachment against President Yoon.
The Constitutional Court approved the impeachment of President Yoon on April 4. According to the law, an election must be held within 60 days. Han had announced the election would take place on May 3.
After Han’s resignation, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok has taken over as Acting President and Prime Minister.
