Home Minister Sudan Gurung has said that the government has completed the necessary preparations to deal with monsoon-related disasters.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority on Thursday, Gurung stated that the government has strengthened its disaster response plans based on lessons learned from previous years.
He said security agencies have been instructed to remain on high alert and response teams have already been mobilized. According to him, the government's main focus this year will be on protecting and rescuing citizens rather than conducting ministerial inspections. Helicopters and other resources will be deployed whenever necessary.
Gurung added that the government will continue the positive initiatives of previous administrations while addressing existing shortcomings. He emphasized the need for stronger institutional coordination and improvements in disaster management.
Highlighting citizen safety as the government's primary responsibility, the minister said the Home Ministry should be a trusted institution for every citizen, especially women. He remarked that the ministry should be viewed as “a parental home for every daughter,” assuring that the government remains committed to providing security and services to all. He also claimed that the police force is currently operating more effectively than before.
On crime control, Gurung said he regularly consults with senior police officials and stressed that law enforcement will remain free from political influence. Anyone involved in wrongdoing, regardless of political affiliation, will face legal action.
He further warned that the performance of security officials will be closely monitored. Officers who fail to fulfill their responsibilities may face action, while those who perform well will be rewarded. Promotions, he said, will be based solely on merit, integrity, and performance rather than political pressure or personal connections.
