At least six people died and many others were injured in a stampede today at a famous Hindu temple in India’s Uttarakhand state.
The incident happened on the stairs leading to the Mansa Devi Temple, located on the banks of the Ganga River in the holy city of Haridwar. The temple is a popular pilgrimage site for Hindu devotees.
According to senior police officer Parmendra Doval, over 10 injured people have been taken to the hospital for treatment.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that rescue and relief efforts are underway. He also stated that he is in constant contact with local authorities and is closely monitoring the situation.
Such tragic incidents caused by crowd surges and stampedes during religious festivals are not uncommon in India. In June, a similar incident in the coastal state of Odisha during a Hindu festival killed at least three people and injured several others.
Last month, another stampede occurred in Goa during a fire-carrying pilgrimage event, also resulting in three deaths.
Back in January, during the grand Hindu festival Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, at least 30 people lost their lives in a crowd-related clash.
