Deputy Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, Neelam Dhungana, has said that the central bank is not in a position to issue new licenses for banks at the moment.
Speaking at an event in Kathmandu today, Dhungana stated that although there has been some talk about establishing new banks, the current situation does not allow for distributing licenses right away.
She mentioned that a study conducted two years ago had suggested the number of banks in Nepal should be around 15 to 18. So, issuing new licenses now by ignoring that report would not be appropriate.
“We can't just start giving out licenses without proper research and a clear basis. Two years ago, the central bank itself had said there should be only 15 to 18 banks,” Dhungana explained.
She added that Nepal Rastra Bank is continuously working to maintain stability in the banking sector through monetary policy, regulations, and other necessary measures.
According to her, the central bank is closely observing the current condition and trends of banks and financial institutions in Nepal.
