Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered 56 crore 50 lakh American Dollar to help strengthen the Maldives defense forces and infrastructure. According to international news agency AFP, Modi said India will continue to support the Maldives in building its defense capabilities. He also mentioned that peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region are shared goals for both countries.
This announcement came during Modi’s first official visit to the island nation after beginning his third term as Prime Minister. During the visit, he said that India would remain the Maldives’ "first responder" in times of need.
In 2023, after President Mohamed Muizzu—known for his anti-India stance was elected, the Maldives appeared to be leaning closer to China. This shift raised concerns for India, a major regional power.
Since taking office, Muizzu asked for a small group of Indian military personnel to leave the country. However, he met Prime Minister Modi twice in New Delhi last year, and both leaders agreed to start a “new chapter” in India-Maldives relations.
