Sabin Maharjan (29) of Kirtipur-4, who was killed in a shooting in suspicious circumstances during the March 28 protest of royalist forces at Koteshwor, was cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat on Tuesday.
After a post-mortem at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj, his body was taken to Aryaghat where Sabin’s father, Shrikrishna Maharjan, performed the rite.
A video footage, purportedly of the May 28 protest at Koteshwor, does not give any indication that the situation had gone out of control there. It shows some protesters on the site and a group of police personnel at a distance. Apparently, they do not appear to be posing a threat to each other.
Then, all of a sudden, a person is fired at and he falls on the road, creating a commotion with people shouting and coming to his rescue.
Per reports, the fallen person was Sabin Maharjan. He passed away on the way to hospital for treatment.
What is also unclear is how he ended up at the protest hotspot. Per family members, Sabin, who used to drive his Tata Sumo jeep along the Kathmandu-Hetaunda route, had headed that day to Balkhu for the maintenance of the vehicle.
Talking earlier with nepalverifiednews.com, Sabin’s uncle, Kiran Maharjan, had demanded that the government declare Sabin a martyr, compensate the bereaved family for the irreparable loss and provide support for the upkeep of Sabin’s wife and their daughter.
