The parliamentary State Affairs and Good Governance appears to be in a mood to take Minister for Home Affairs, Ramesh Lekhak, to task over certain security lapses that occurred during the protest of pro-royalist forces on March 28.
At a meeting of the committee on Wednesday, lawmakers from both the ruling and opposition parties demanded explanations from Minister Lekhak over his failure to prevent the incidents of looting, vandalism and arson and the loss of lives in the course of demonstrations in Tinkune and Koteshwor areas on March 28.
Chief whip of the CPN (Maoist Center), Hitraj Pandey, said the situation went out of control that day as the government failed to take the right steps.
He was referring to the police force’s failure to take the coordinator of the protest, Durga Prasain, under control, after which things went out of control.
The home minister should be summoned and explanations sought from him for this lapse, he said.
Chair of the committee, Ramhari Khatiwada, said Minister Lekhak will appear before the committee on April 4 and respond to the lawmakers’ questions.
