Pressure is growing within the Nepali Congress to convene a Special General Convention after it became clear that the party’s 15th regular convention cannot be held on schedule.
The regular convention was planned for Poush 26–28, but delays have prompted General Secretary Gagan Thapa and his supporters to push for a Special General Convention within Poush, calling it constitutionally necessary and vital for party unity and confidence.
Under the party statute, a special convention must be called if 40 percent of delegates demand it. Earlier, 2,488 delegates (54 percent) submitted a written request on October 15, with the three-month deadline ending on January 11. Leaders backing the move say the date and venue could be fixed soon.
Legal experts argue that if the Central Committee fails to act, the party’s general secretaries can legally convene the convention. However, party president Sher Bahadur Deuba has opposed the move, calling it unnecessary, while senior leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has warned it could deepen internal divisions ahead of elections.
With the deadline nearing, the party remains sharply divided over whether a Special General Convention is the way forward.
