Emphasising the spirit of democratic practice, senior Nepali Congress leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has said his party will not shy away from elections nor fear defeat, stating that accepting loss is a natural part of democracy.
Addressing the 26th annual general meeting of Morang Samaj Kathmandu on Tuesday, Dr Koirala said the Nepali Congress is always ready to face elections. He added that while parties must be prepared to lose, the government carries the responsibility of ensuring a peaceful, fair and secure electoral environment.
Referring to the upcoming House of Representatives election, he noted that parties have already submitted their proportional representation lists but raised concerns over the deteriorating law-and-order situation. He said the declining morale of the police could affect the credibility of the polls, stressing that maintaining election security is the responsibility of the police, not the army.
Dr Koirala also urged the state to quickly track down escaped prisoners and recover looted weapons to restore public trust ahead of the elections.
