Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, visited Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS) and Kirtipur Eye Hospital during her official trip to Nepal. As the Global Ambassador for the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), she recognized Nepal’s progress in preventing blindness and improving eye care.

During her visit, the Duchess visited the hospital, observed its medical services, and spoke with patients who received life-changing treatments.

While praising Nepal’s efforts in integrating eye care into its healthcare system, the Duchess highlighted NNJS’s role in eliminating trachoma from the country.

Kirtipur Eye Hospital, supported by the UK-based Ridley Eye Foundation, provides free cataract surgeries in remote, high-altitude regions, ensuring eye care for underserved communities. The Duchess commended these efforts and their impact on preventing curable blindness.

Professor Dr. Chet Raj Pant, Chairperson of NNJS, along with other hospital officials, welcomed the Duchess and discussed the hospital’s services. NNJS operates 28 hospitals, 160 eye care centers, and 44 district branches across Nepal.

Over 46 years, it has treated 43.6 million people and performed 5.1 million surgeries, reaching even remote regions.

The Duchess’s visit reaffirmed the shared global commitment to eliminating preventable blindness and promoting global eye health.
