Nepali Congress leader Shekhar Koirala has instructed leaders from his faction to accept the party’s decision and actively take part in the upcoming elections.

Addressing a gathering of his supporters in Kathmandu on Sunday, Koirala issued the directive despite the party dispute having reached the Supreme Court. Speaking to News Agency Nepal, a leader who attended the meeting said Koirala told them to return to their respective districts and prepare for the elections, accepting whatever decision the court delivers.

During the meeting, Koirala reportedly said that as the Election Commission’s decision has already been implemented, all leaders should engage in the party’s candidate selection process and work to ensure the party’s victory in the elections.

“In the current constitutional crisis and the complex situation within the party, I urge you to take the lead in supporting and getting party candidates elected,” Koirala was quoted as saying.

On Friday, the Election Commission, by a majority decision, granted official recognition to the Nepali Congress led by Gagan Thapa, who was elected through a special general convention. The Sher Bahadur Deuba faction has opposed the decision and has already filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court.

Leaders present at the meeting also said Koirala urged them to focus not only on the elections but also on the party’s upcoming 15th general convention. He further called on party members to concentrate on the elections and return to their respective regions, emphasizing that the Nepali Congress must continue to safeguard the sovereign rights of the Nepali people.
