The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier has started in Nepal today.

Nepal’s women’s cricket team will begin their campaign by playing against Thailand in the first match of the tournament on Sunday.

Ahead of the tournament, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) held a press conference on Saturday evening. CAN said the team is well prepared and confident of doing better than before. Team captain Indu Verma said Nepal is aiming to at least reach the Super Six stage. She added that the team has improved in batting and fielding, and playing at home will be a big advantage.

Ten teams are taking part in the tournament: Nepal, Scotland, the United States, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Ireland, Papua New Guinea, and the Netherlands.

Nepal played practice matches against the Netherlands, Thailand, and the United States. Captain Verma said these matches helped the team understand how to compete with strong teams and how to turn matches in their favor.

This is the biggest women’s cricket tournament ever hosted by Nepal. Captain Verma said hosting such a major event will help Nepali players gain experience and inspire young girls to take up cricket.

Captains from other teams, including Namibia and the United States, also said the practice matches helped them understand the pitch and ground conditions in Nepal and prepare better for the tournament.

The opening match between Nepal and Thailand will start at 9:00 am on Sunday at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground.
