North Queensland has been experiencing record-breaking rainfall since Friday, causing rivers to overflow and severely damaging infrastructures. The worst affected areas include Townsville, Ingham, Cardwell, and Halifax, where hundreds of properties have been submerged. Although the Bureau of Meteorology lifted its severe weather warning on Tuesday, floodwaters remain high and dangerous.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli described the disaster as one of the worst floods seen in the region, warning that recovery will take a long time. Over 400 people have sought shelter in emergency centres, with many forced to evacuate.

On Saturday, six low-lying suburbs in Townsville were ordered to evacuate as floodwaters threatened homes. Power outages continue to affect more than 8,000 properties, with 4,500 homes in Ingham facing prolonged blackouts.

The disaster has claimed a life, as a woman in her 60s drowned in Ingham on Sunday when a rescue boat overturned. Five others on the boat were rescued. Emergency services have received nearly 500 calls for help and have rescued many people trapped in homes and vehicles. State Disaster Coordinator Shane Chelepy urged residents to stay cautious, as floodwaters remain dangerous.

Major flood warnings have been issued for six rivers that remain dangerously high. Scientists have raised concerns over extreme weather events like this, linking them to climate change. Townsville has experienced major floods three times in the past six years.

Although the heavy rain is expected to ease, but authorities warn the danger isn't over yet. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to stay alert and follow safety instructions.
