On the occasion of Martyrs' Week, the statues of Gangalal Shrestha and Dasharath Chand were being garlanded with flowers on Wednesday in memory of their sacrifice for democracy. Their statues, situated on the banks of the Vishnumati River near Shobha Bhagwati, have flower offerings in their memory as part of a tribute as the two had been executed by the then Rana regime on Magh 15, 1997.

Shrestha and Chand were martyred in the course of their efforts to oppose the autocratic regime, mobilizing the people for democratic change. Their statues were installed at the execution site as a memory of their courage.

Martyrs' Week started from Magh 10, and other martyrs to whom homage was paid include Shukraraj Shastri at Teku Pachali on Magh 10 and Dharma Bhakta Mathema at Sifal on Magh 13. Martyrs' Day falls on Magh 16.

A morning walk starting from Shanti Batika will proceed up to Lainchaur tomorrow, where a mass gathering will be held.
