The Election Commission (EC) has registered more than 80,000 new voters using the National Identity Card system, marking a significant rise in enrolment.

EC spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said that as of Friday evening, 80,456 new voters had been added, including 50,217 men, 30,235 women, and four categorized as ‘others.’ With this, the total number of voters registered since the election announcement has reached 281,129.

The Commission introduced the National ID-based registration on November 12 to reduce pressure on district and local election offices. Citizens can now submit biometric details, including photographs and fingerprints, digitally.

This expanded registration process is part of preparations for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.
