The Election Commission (EC) has extended the voter registration deadline by five days, giving citizens until November 21 to enroll for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5. The original deadline was November 16.
The extension follows a request from Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who asked the Commission to allow sufficient time for all eligible voters amid a sharp increase in online registrations. The surge came after the government enabled citizens to register digitally using their national ID, without visiting registration centers.
EC officials said 35,000 people successfully registered on the first day, but heavy traffic caused the system to crash on Friday morning. Technical teams reported over 3.5 million registration attempts, with more than 600,000 requests made to integrate National ID data with EC records. Only around 100,000 applicants were successfully authenticated before the disruption.
Users also reported difficulties selecting districts and stalled sessions due to server overload. The EC has assured that the issue has been resolved and online registration services will gradually stabilize from Saturday onward.
