Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Shraddha Shrestha has said that ensuring access to justice for women and girls is not only a fundamental right but also a key foundation of gender equality.

Speaking at the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York, she said Nepal is committed to promoting gender equality through constitutional guarantees and international obligations, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Nepal has criminalized domestic violence, child marriage, human trafficking, and sexual abuse through legal reforms.

Shrestha said Nepal has strengthened its justice system by establishing gender-friendly courts, simplifying complaint procedures, and expanding victim support services and free legal aid. She also highlighted efforts to promote inclusive representation and empowerment of marginalized women.

She called on the global community to strengthen cooperation, mobilize resources, and utilize technology to ensure that women and girls everywhere can access justice without barriers. The UN session will run until March 19.
