The Judicial Council has recommended the names of six justices for the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The recommendation was made to appoint a new Chief Justice after the post becomes vacant on Chaitra 18.

 

Current Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut will retire on Chaitra 18 after reaching the constitutional retirement age of 65.

 

The council has recommended the names of Senior Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla, Justice Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma, Justice Kumar Regmi, Justice Hari Phuyal, Justice Til Prasad Shrestha, and Justice Dr. Nahakul Subedi.

 

Justices who have served in the Supreme Court for at least three years are eligible to become Chief Justice.

 

According to the provision, the name of the new Chief Justice must be recommended one month before the incumbent retires.

 

The proposed Chief Justice recommended by the Constitutional Council will be appointed after receiving approval through a parliamentary hearing.
