Amid internal debates and shifting alliances, nine leftist factions, including the CPN (Maoist Centre) and CPN (Unified Socialist) are preparing to formally unite under the name Nepali Communist Party. The announcement will be made at a mass gathering in Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu, on Wednesday, following a public rally scheduled before the 1 PM ceremony.

The newly formed party will adopt a five-pointed star as its election symbol and embrace Marxism-Leninism as its guiding ideology. Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ will serve as coordinator, while Madhav Kumar Nepal will act as co-coordinator. A national general convention is planned within six months.

The unification includes the Maoist Centre, Unified Socialist, Nepal Samajbadi, CPN (Socialist), Janasamajwadi Party Nepal, Nepal Communist Party, CPN (Maoist Socialist), CPN Samyabadi, and Deshbhakta Samajbadi Morcha led by Gopal Kirati.

On Tuesday, the Maoist Centre’s National Convention Organizing Committee officially approved the merger.

Despite the momentum, dissent persists within key parties. Maoist leader Janardan Sharma has announced a separate campaign, while Unified Socialist figures, including Jhalanath Khanal, Ghanashyam Bhusal, and Ramkumari Jhankri have voiced strong objections.

Dahal has said talks are underway to bring former UML leader Bhim Rawal and other leftist leaders into the new alliance, signaling that the unification process may yet expand further.
