The Home Ministry has launched an investigation into reports that unrelated individuals were taken to Spain by posing as participants of a UN conference attended by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has directed Nepal Police’s CIB and Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau to probe how people outside the official delegation secured visas and traveled with the help of middlemen. The Immigration Department will assist in the investigation.

Preliminary findings show some individuals may have traveled under false pretexts and remained in Spain. At least seven people reportedly stayed back after using fake NGO registrations to get invitations and visas.

The investigation will also check the full list of those who traveled on visit visas during the conference, and whether they returned. Authorities say action will be taken against anyone found involved.
