The Nepal Teachers Federation has once again raised its voice, warning the government of renewed protests. This comes after repeated delays in fulfilling promises made during earlier agreements, especially concerning the long-awaited School Education Act.
In a statement released today, the Federation expressed disappointment that the government has still not introduced or passed the Education Bill in Parliament. They emphasized that this delay not only breaks trust but also threatens the future of Nepal’s school education system. The union has urged the government to immediately table and pass the bill to avoid further unrest.
The Federation reminded the public of their previous 89-day protest and the street movement that lasted 29 days, starting from Chaitra 20 (April 2). That protest had ended after an agreement was reached to pass the bill by Asar 15 (June 29). However, with the deadline now passed and no progress made, the union says it is left with no option but to consider resuming protests.
The teachers also voiced concerns over several issues that remain unresolved. These include demands for permanent status for temporary teachers, timely promotions for permanent teachers, fair handling of disciplinary actions, and the protection of trade union rights as guaranteed by the Constitution. Other concerns involve the management of teacher transfers, school staff, early childhood educators, and the situation of private school staff and conflict-affected teachers. The union also raised the issue of unaddressed teacher position allocations and administrative delays.
The Federation has called on the government to act seriously and responsibly, warning that if it continues to ignore these important matters, teachers across the country will once again take to the streets.
