Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Devendra Dahal, has said that the government will now focus on larger development projects—specifically those with budgets over Rs 50 million—to improve efficiency in the upcoming fiscal years.

Speaking at an event organized by the Society of Infrastructure Journalists, Dahal said that focusing on big, impactful projects will help the government make better use of limited funds and deliver real results.

He criticized the current system, saying that important projects often begin only after the budget is allocated, causing delays. Even projects labeled as “national pride” are slowed down by outdated practices, he noted.

The minister also pointed out that contractors often start late, ask for deadline extensions, or use political connections to avoid penalties. In some cases, bridge contracts are awarded without confirming funding, which has added to today’s financial troubles.

Dahal stressed that poor coordination among the growing number of regulatory bodies is another reason for the inefficiency. He called for better teamwork in line with sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The minister also said the government is working to revise the Public Procurement Regulations. Under the new rules, if a contractor’s deadline is extended, they will have to cover the extra costs themselves.

Many projects under his ministry are still stuck in the tender process, and Dahal urged the National Planning Commission to play a stronger role in making sure projects are implemented on time.

Overall, Minister Dahal emphasized that future development must be well-prepared, properly funded, and efficiently executed to ensure long-term impact.
