For the first time in Nepal’s political history, a former Prime Minister has been charged with corruption.

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case at the Special Court against former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal. The charges are related to a government decision made during his term in office.

While Nepal was Prime Minister, the government had allowed Patanjali Yogpeeth to purchase land, originally under land ceiling restrictions for the purpose of herb farming and building an Ayurvedic hospital. The land was granted under special exemption.

However, later, the same land was reportedly sold with the approval of the Cabinet, which raised questions. The CIAA launched an investigation, and based on its findings, it has now filed a case against Nepal.

This is also the first time a Cabinet decision has led to a corruption case being filed in court, marking a significant moment in Nepal’s legal and political history.
