Nepal is set to make Mount Everest climbs safer with a new route expected to open in March. The trail follows the original path of Hillary and Tenzing via Nupse Himal and is nearly complete, designed to replace the dangerous Khumbu Icefall, where most Everest fatalities occur.
The 200-meter route is being developed by Nepali climber Kaji Sherpa with French mountaineers Marc Batard and Antoine Eroll, supported largely by private donations. So far, 220 of the 270 fixed steps have been installed to support ladders and safety ropes.
Officials say the alternative path will reduce risk, crowding, and pollution at the base camp, benefiting the roughly 800 climbers who attempt Everest each year. The project, approved by the cabinet earlier this year, allows construction up to Camp One (6,100 meters), after which climbers rejoin the traditional upper route. Authorities confirm the trail meets safety and environmental standards, promising a safer Everest experience for future mountaineers.
