The government has started consultations with experts and stakeholders to enable Nepalis living abroad to vote remotely in the upcoming March 5, 2026 parliamentary elections.

A meeting in Kathmandu, coordinated by the Home and Law Ministries and the Nepal Policy Institute (NPI), focused on legal, technical, and security aspects of external voting.

Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal stressed that every Nepali, at home or abroad, should exercise their constitutional right to vote, while Law Minister Anil Kumar Sinha highlighted transparency and citizen-friendly systems.

Former Chief Election Commissioner Nilkantha Upreti urged the adoption of modern voting technologies, noting the importance of including overseas voters in the democratic process.

NPI Chair Dr. Khagendra Raj Dhakal recommended a secure i-Voting system covering both Proportional Representation and First-Past-The-Post categories, citing examples from the Philippines and Mexico. He added that excluding migrant workers, who contribute nearly a third of Nepal’s GDP through remittances weakens democracy.

Officials and experts agreed that implementing external voting would enhance inclusivity and strengthen democratic participation for Nepalis worldwide.
