Minister for Education, Science and Technology Bidhya Bhattarai has resigned from her post amid ongoing protests by teachers demanding reforms in the education sector.

She submitted her resignation to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Monday afternoon, following weeks of pressure from teachers who have been staging demonstrations in Kathmandu for over 20 days.

The protesting teachers are calling for the government to pass the new School Education Act by addressing their demands. Although Minister Bhattarai had held multiple discussions with key leaders and officials, including the Prime Minister, Finance Minister and the Speaker, the talks failed to produce results.

According to Bhattarai’s press coordinator, Ramji Lamsal, her resignation was officially handed over today (April 21) after a meeting with Prime Minister Oli. The Ministry has confirmed her resignation.

Teachers' representatives say the movement will continue until their demands are addressed through law, stating that previous promises must now be honored with concrete action.
