The Sun Koshi Marin Multipurpose Project, a national pride initiative, has begun the process of terminating its contract with the Patel–Raman JV, responsible for constructing the dam, powerhouse, and hydromechanical structures.
The project office stated in a public notice that although nearly 61% of the contract period has passed, physical progress stands at only 10%, and the contractor has failed to take corrective measures. As a result, the contract termination process has been initiated. Additionally, bank guarantees totaling Rs 3.6 billion, including Rs 2.4 billion performance security and Rs 1.2 billion advance payment are in the process of being confiscated.
The original contract was valued at Rs 14.88 billion, with work commencing in Magh 2079 and scheduled for completion by Asar 2084. However, the project has made minimal progress to date.
Once completed, the project aims to divert water from the Marin River in Sindhuli–Ramechhap to provide year-round irrigation to five districts in the Terai region and generate 31 MW of hydroelectric power. The estimated total cost of the project is Rs 49.42 billion.
