Chinese scientists have successfully launched a high-energy underwater neutrino telescope (HUNT) in the South China Sea.

According to the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), HUNT is a process that seeks special scientific data to better understand the universe.

This telescope works by detecting and studying particles that help scientists learn more about the universe, as reported by the Chinese news agency Xinhua.

For the scientific research, the ship Tan Suo-3 and the manned submarine Shenhai Yongshi helped place the detector at a predetermined location 1,600 meters below the sea surface, as stated by the institute.

According to IHEP, the detector was also successfully connected to China’s underwater scientific observation network and technical infrastructure.

Neutrinos are very small particles that are difficult to observe. They carry fundamental information. Chinese scientists have proposed HUNT as a major scientific tool that is expected to lead the development of neutrino astronomy.
