Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death after being convicted of crimes against humanity by the country’s International Crimes Tribunal.
The special court ruled that Hasina ordered a violent crackdown on last year’s student-led uprising, a suppression that left dozens dead and hundreds injured. The prosecution had filed charges in June against Hasina and two of her senior allies.
Along with Hasina, the tribunal also convicted former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Police Inspector General Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, holding them responsible for atrocities committed during the July revolt.
The verdict was based on statements from 54 witnesses, according to the court.
Hasina, who has been living in exile in India, was tried in absentia. She has previously dismissed the trial as politically motivated.
