Education, Science and Technology Minister Mahabir Pun has expressed strong dissatisfaction after several Gen Z movement leaders began forming and registering their own political parties.
Sharing a news report on social media on Monday, Minister Pun warned that the growing trend of fragmentation and competition among Gen Z figures for party registration could be “self-destructive” and harmful to the broader movement.
Pun remarked that Gen Z activists are “digging their own hole,” pointing out that 123 parties have already been registered for the upcoming election, with 32 more in the process. He cautioned that this excessive division could pave the way for traditional political forces to return to power.
“If this continues, Nepal will once again see the rise of corrupt old leaders and their networks,” he wrote, adding that the goals of the Gen Z movement could collapse and the positive steps taken by the current cabinet might be reversed if traditional parties regain control.
According to the Election Commission, some of the newly registered and pending parties are indeed led by Gen Z activists, raising concerns among observers about the movement’s unity and long-term direction.
