The Nepal Electricity Authority’s (NEA) underground cable project, launched in 2076 B.S. with the aim of removing overhead wires and modernizing the city’s power system, is still ongoing in many areas of Kathmandu. While roads in places like Anamnagar, Shantinagar, and Rudramati remain dug up, creating challenges for pedestrians and vehicles, there have been notable advancements as well.
Modern drilling machines are now being used to minimize the size of trenches, and some areas have successfully completed cable installations. However, delays in road restoration, poor coordination among agencies, and disputes over cost-sharing have slowed overall progress. Despite the difficulties, the project holds long-term benefits, including improved city aesthetics, safer electrical infrastructure, and fewer power disruptions.
