A 39-year-old woman from Ilam has died of COVID-19, marking Nepal’s first known coronavirus-related death since the global emergency was officially declared over.
The woman passed away at 6 AM on Tuesday at Nobel Teaching Hospital in Biratnagar. According to hospital spokesperson Naveen Dahal, she was referred from Birtacity Hospital in Jhapa after testing positive for COVID-19. She had been suffering from fever and breathing problems.
Doctors tried to treat her in the emergency ward, but she could not be saved. Her body has since been handed over to the police for further procedure.
Health officials say this is the first confirmed COVID death in the country in the post-pandemic period. Meanwhile, Koshi Province is seeing a small rise in infections, with eight active cases, four in Jhapa, and two each in Morang and Ilam, according to the provincial health ministry.
