In response to growing concerns over the visit visa misuse case, the government has taken action by forming a high-level investigation committee. The move was confirmed by Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak during Tuesday’s session of the House of Representatives.
The committee, led by former Chief Secretary Shankar Das Bairagi, includes joint secretaries from concerned ministries. It was formed following a Cabinet meeting on Monday night. Minister Lekhak stated that the committee has been given nine specific mandates and that the government will implement the recommendations seriously.
What the Committee Will Focus On:
Policy and Legal Reform: Review and suggest changes in laws, policies, and procedures related to immigration and travel, both short-term and long-term.
Immigration Process Review: Study how people enter and leave the country, especially on visit and labor visas, and recommend ways to prevent misuse.
Administrative Improvements: Recommend structural and staffing reforms within immigration offices.
Agency Coordination: Identify gaps in coordination among relevant departments and suggest solutions.
Learning from Abroad: Study international best practices and adapt them for Nepal’s context.
Illegal Stay Prevention: Investigate issues faced by Nepalis staying illegally abroad and suggest ways to reduce such incidents.
Technology Use: Propose tech-friendly upgrades to make immigration services faster, more efficient, and user-friendly.
Clear Roles: Help define the roles of different stakeholders involved in cross-border movement.
Secure Data Management: Recommend systems to maintain accurate and safe records of travelers.
Minister Lekhak emphasized that once the committee submits its report, the government will take appropriate action to improve immigration management and restore public trust.
