Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) resumed flight operations on Thursday after being closed for about three and a half hours due to bad weather.

The airport was closed from around 7:30 am because flights could not operate as visibility was very low. According to airport officials, flights started operating again from 11:00 am after visibility improved.

TIA authorities said visibility increased to 1,700 metres, which allowed flights to resume using Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). Flight operations had been stopped earlier because visibility had dropped sharply, but improved weather conditions later in the morning made it possible to restart both arrivals and departures.

Officials said poor visibility had affected Kathmandu airport since around 1:00 am. Under aviation rules, IFR is used when visibility is below 5,000 metres. Large aircraft usually need visibility of more than 2,200 metres to fly normally.

The airport has requested passengers to check with their airlines before coming to the airport, as some flights may still face delays or schedule changes.
