A joint bench of Supreme Court justices Nahakul Suvedi and Balkrishna Dhakal has quashed a habeas corpus petition seeking the release of Rabi Lamichhane, who is behind bars on the charge of embezzling depositors’ savings in the capacity of the then managing director of Gorkha Media Network Pvt Ltd. The court has upheld the order of the Butwal bench of the Tulsipur high court to send him to custody in connection with a fraud case associated with the Supreme Cooperative in Lumbini.
This verdict means Lamichhane, a media personality turned an elected lawmaker and Minister for Home Affairs from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (the fourth largest party in the federal parliament) marking a meteoric rise and a shocking downfall, will get to walk free if the Rupandehi district court issues a verdict in his favor, with a rider: By then, he should get clean chit from courts vis-a-vis other charges leveled against him.
On January 26, the Rupandehi district court had ordered Lamichhane’s release on a bail of Rs 10 million in connection with the Butwal Supreme Cooperative Fraud case.
However, on April 5, police arrested him from Budhanilkantha following an order from the Butwal bench of the Tulsipur high court.
Since then, Lamichhane has been doing time in a Bhairahawa jail.
