A nationwide education strike called by the All Nepal National Free Students Union (Revolutionary) forced schools across Nepal to remain closed on Friday. The union is affiliated with the CPN (Maoist) majority faction led by Dharmendra Bastola.
The strike aimed to pressure the government to meet several demands, including free education, an end to privatization, and the swift passage of the Education Act.
Many private schools informed parents about the closure via SMS on Thursday evening, but some did not, leaving students confused when they arrived and were sent home.
Most government schools were already on summer vacation, reducing the strike’s impact on public education.
The student union stated that the shutdown was essential to uphold the constitutional right to accessible and equitable education for all.
