Police have released Dhawal Shumsher Rana, general secretary of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, on a general date to facilitate his treatment.
Along with Rabindra Mishra, senior vice-president of the RPP, police had taken Rana for an investigation into the violence and death that occurred during the March 28 protest of pro-royalist forces in Tinkune and Koteshwor.
Rana’s conditional release from the custody of the Kathmandu district police complex, with consent from the government attorney’s office, is meant to facilitate his cancer treatment. Health permitting, Rana will have to appear before the police administration on their specified dates for facilitating the investigation.
A cancer survivor, Rana had undergone a three-month treatment at a hospital in India and returned to Nepal in December last year.
Rana’s release from custody comes amid criticism of the government for not facilitating his follow-up checkup.
It may be noted that police briefly arrested RPP leaders including party Chair Rajendra Lingden and Gyanendra Shahi in the course of a protest in prohibited zones on Sunday (April 21).
The party has been organizing a series of protests of late demanding the restoration of the country as a Hindu kingdom and the constitutional monarchy.
