Nepali Congress central member and State Affairs and Good Governance Committee Chairperson Ramhari Khatiwada has said he is ready to step down if the party directs him to do so.
Khatiwada has come under pressure after the controversial endorsement of the “cooling-off period” provision, which differed from what was passed by the Federal Civil Service Bill Committee. Opposition parties have demanded his resignation, accusing him of bypassing committee decisions.
Speaking during a party meeting, Khatiwada said, “If the party believes I made a mistake and tells me to leave the position, I’m ready.” He requested that parliamentary matters not be used to tarnish reputations and added that he is willing to accept decisions made by any official investigation committee.
He also expressed concern over internal efforts to weaken top party leaders, including the president, vice presidents, and general secretaries. “Where is this culture of blame going to take us?” he asked fellow party members, warning that such infighting damages the party’s image.
Khatiwada questioned the trend of targeting leaders like Bal Krishna Khand, Mohan Bahadur Basnet, Ramesh Lekhak, and Arzu Deuba. He also defended Gagan Thapa, saying weakening such leaders won’t make others stronger.
