Supporters within the Nepali Congress are pushing hard for a special general convention, citing delays by the current leadership. On Sunday, a petition signed by 2,488 delegates of the party’s 14th general convention was submitted to the central office, demanding immediate action.
Delegate Manojmani Acharya said the central committee’s prolonged meetings suggest an intention to avoid the convention and extend their tenure. He stressed that the current leadership has lost the mandate to lead and that a new team should take over before upcoming elections. Acharya emphasized that a convention this fiscal year is both legally justified and urgently needed.
Central member Guru Ghimire condemned the violent incidents of Bhadra 23–24, asserting that the party had no role in them. He said these events revealed weaknesses in the leadership and reinforced the need for the convention to be held by the end of Mangsir, ensuring proper preparation for future elections.
The petition, submitted on Asoj 29 to acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka, cited Article 17(2) of the party constitution to justify the special convention amid the changing political environment.
