As Tihar approaches, Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has confirmed that households can light up their homes without worrying about power shortages. Traditionally, electricity demand surges during the festival due to decorative lighting, raising concerns among consumers.
According to NEA spokesperson Rajan Dhakal, the country’s hydropower plants have a combined installed capacity of 4,000 MW, producing around 2,700–2,800 MW daily even while some projects undergo maintenance. Last year, peak demand on Lakshmi Puja reached 1,600 MW, whereas this year it’s expected to rise slightly to 1,700 MW.
With many industries closed during the holiday, an estimated 200–300 MW could be saved, ensuring smoother household consumption. Dhakal also highlighted that NEA could potentially export 1,000 MW to India even during the festival period.
To prevent any disruptions, the authority has directed staff to stay alert and monitor supply. Residents are encouraged to enjoy Tihar celebrations with lights confidently, as NEA says preparations are complete for uninterrupted power.
