In one of the biggest corruption cases in Nepal’s health sector, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has charged former Health Services Director General Dr. Sangita Kaushal Mishra and 13 others over irregularities in the purchase of mammography machines.

The investigation found that officials deliberately inflated costs, forged documents, and approved payments for undelivered equipment. The supplier company, Maxim Incorporation Trades Pvt. Ltd., allegedly received full payment despite incomplete delivery, causing a state loss of over Rs 140 million.

According to CIAA officials, fake inspection reports and payment records were created to clear the transactions. The real price of the machines was almost half of what was billed, suggesting large-scale collusion between government officials and the contractor.

The anti-graft body has filed the case at the Special Court, seeking imprisonment, fines, and recovery of the embezzled funds under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
