Electricity demand in Nepal reached a record 1,650 megawatts on Monday evening during Laxmi Pooja, one of the most energy-intensive days of the Tihar festival.
According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), despite the surge in domestic consumption, the country successfully exported 1,015 megawatts of electricity the same day.
This year’s peak demand exceeded last year’s Laxmi Pooja record of 1,602 megawatts by 48 megawatts. The NEA said Nepal’s growing hydropower generation has allowed it to maintain surplus electricity, enabling consistent exports to India and Bangladesh even during peak national demand.
