Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that the problem related to funding sources for the health insurance program will be resolved immediately. Speaking during a discussion with concerned stakeholders on Wednesday, she stated that the health insurance program is meant for the poor, persons with disabilities, the helpless, and other vulnerable groups, and therefore must be treated as an emergency issue.
Prime Minister Karki emphasized the need for strict regulation of the program and said that discussions would be held with the Finance Minister without delay to find a solution. She said the government would arrange the required budget for health insurance even by taking loans if necessary. According to her, it is unacceptable for people to pay insurance premiums while the government fails to ensure funds for their treatment.
She stressed that the health insurance program should be implemented through a one-door system and that services must be provided only after proper identification of genuine beneficiaries. The Prime Minister said the current unregulated situation should not continue, as it allows misuse while the real beneficiaries are deprived of services.
Prime Minister Karki also informed that the Ministry of Health is preparing policy and legal arrangements to operate the program through a one-door system. She added that once the Finance Minister returns from abroad, immediate discussions will be held to improve the program and resolve the funding
