US Congress Passes Funding Bill, Ends Partial Government Shutdown

The US House of Representatives has approved a Senate-passed funding package by a narrow 217–214 vote, ending the partial government shutdown and a brief federal funding lapse. The bill, which now heads to President Donald Trump for signature, will fund key federal agencies through September 30, while Homeland Security receives temporary funding as immigration talks continue.

The US House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a funding package approved earlier by the Senate, bringing an end to the partial government shutdown and the federal funding lapse that began on Saturday. The lower chamber approved the measure by a narrow vote of 217–214.

The House passed the bill after the US Senate approved the funding package on Friday evening, just hours before government funding for several departments was set to expire. The bill will now go to US President Donald Trump, who has said he will sign it immediately.

The latest package will fund many US federal agencies for the remainder of the fiscal year ending on September 30. These include the Departments of Defense, Education, Health and Human Services, Labor, Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development.

Funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which was initially included in the bipartisan package, has been removed. Instead, the department will receive a two-week continuing resolution at current funding levels, allowing both parties and the White House to continue negotiations on immigration enforcement.

Recent fatal shootings involving federal enforcement officers in Minneapolis have prompted Democrats to push for changes in how immigration agencies operate.
