Petroleum imports through the Birgunj checkpoint reached Rs 90.6 billion in the first six months of the current fiscal year, marking an increase of Rs 2.75 billion compared to the same period last year.
During this period, the government collected Rs 37.85 billion in revenue from petroleum imports, according to the Birgunj Customs Office. Both import volume and revenue have risen notably compared to the first half of the previous fiscal year, when petroleum imports stood at Rs 87.31 billion and generated Rs 36.14 billion in revenue.
Customs data show that diesel accounted for the largest share, with imports worth Rs 45.38 billion, generating Rs 19.85 billion in revenue. Petrol imports totaled Rs 20.98 billion, contributing Rs 13.82 billion in revenue, while LPG gas imports valued at Rs 14.79 billion generated Rs 2.77 billion in revenue.
Officials say the rise reflects increased domestic demand and stronger customs collection compared to the previous fiscal year.
