CPN-UML Chairperson and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has urged the Supreme Court to immediately deliver a verdict on whether to restore Parliament or proceed with elections.

Addressing a House of Representatives election-focused gathering of party workers organized by the CPN-UML Okhaldhunga–Kathmandu Contact Forum, Oli said that since political parties and a majority of lawmakers have filed petitions at the Supreme Court against unconstitutional actions, the court cannot remain silent.

Referring to the unrest of Bhadra 23 and 24 (the mass movement/Gen-Z uprising and the ensuing chaos), Oli accused certain forces of deliberately pushing the country into a severe crisis, weakening the state machinery, and forming a government in an unconstitutional manner, followed by the dissolution of Parliament and the announcement of election dates. He warned that the court’s silence would raise serious questions about constitutional institutions.

He said, “There was deliberate chaos on Bhadra 23 and 24. The country was pushed into a grave crisis. The state and its mechanisms were weakened, politics was undermined, and political parties were suppressed. From that chaos, an unconstitutional government was formed, which announced election dates. Political parties and a majority of MPs approached the respected Supreme Court saying unconstitutional acts had taken place and seeking remedies in line with the Constitution. In such a situation, I urge the Supreme Court, this is not a time to sit silently. A verdict must be delivered: either hold elections or restore Parliament. We are demanding restoration, but the court is not listening. We say the Constitution has been violated, but it is not being heard. The court must speak. If the Constitution has not been violated, say so. If violating it is allowed, say so clearly. When can Parliament be dissolved and when not, clarify it. The court cannot remain silent when the country is trapped in such a constitutional crisis. Such silence raises questions about the very relevance of constitutional institutions. The court must speak before the election, immediately.”

Oli further stated that the court must not adopt silence or bureaucratic delays under any pretext. He said the government’s role should be limited to ensuring free, fair, and impartial elections. Warning that elections would not be acceptable if the government acts to favor specific individuals, he said such actions could lead to serious consequences for the country. He cautioned that assuming the government can act without limits would be disastrous for the nation.
